Theres something about spring that makes everything feel possible again.

After the quiet stillness of winter, the countryside slowly begins to wake up. We long to see new buds on the trees and the vibrant welsh daffodils coming into bloom. The landscape springs up with new life and the Rivers that flow through the valleys run clear and lively after the winter rains.
One of the most refreshing ways to immerse yourself into this season is with a cold water plunge!
Wild swimming has become incredibly popular in Wales and it's easy to see why. The cold water instantly wakes your senses, clears your mind and leaves you feeling completely alive!
Riverside moments (even without the swim)
In the heart of Mid wales there are some beautiful spots where brave swimmers take the plunge.
In Newtown and the surrounding Mid Wales countryside there are plenty of stunning riverside spots that are perfect for those quiet moments in the fresh air, where you can pause and enjoy the calm of nature. There are also plenty of exciting spots for those who are seeking a more thrilling time. Here are just a few beauty spots in and around our area that are known for cold water plunges and peaceful wild water swimming.
The River Severn runs right through our town here in Newtown, This is a stunning river but it does have very strong currents and should be explored with caution and look for designated plunge spots. There are some beautiful hidden river pools nearby in Berriew.
The Warren in Hay-on-Wye is a favourite among many for a gentle river swim
Llangynidr Falls on the `river Usk located in the Brecon Beacons is extremely popular for it's cascading waters and deep water swimming pools.
Wash Pool Irfon in Llanwrtyd Wells is known for it's clear deep waters in a tranquil woodland setting. This is generally a quiet spot in the woodland, perfect for those who don't love a crowd.
Of course even if you prefer to simply dip your toes into the welsh river rather than dive right in, sitting beside a welsh river in spring is it's own kind of therapy. While guests stay at our lodges we love encouraging these little moments of escape. Thats why we provide picnic bags and a cosy picnic blanket, so you can pack up a few essentials and head out on your own countryside adventure. Sometimes the best moments aren't the big adventures, but the quiet ones. Sitting beside the river with a picnic watching the water flow.

When planning a swim, always check local conditions, avoid fast currents, and never swim alone. The wild rivers of Mid Wales can change quickly with weather, so preparation is essential. Safety must be the foundation of every swim in Mid Wales’ wild rivers. The beauty of these waters comes with risks that require respect and preparation.
Start slowly: Begin with short dips to let your body adjust.
Wear appropriate gear: A wetsuit can extend swim time and provide insulation
Buoyancy Aids: These vests provide continuous floatation and are essential for less confident swimmers or strong open waters.
Warm up before and after: Gentle stretching and warm clothing help prevent muscle stiffness.
Know your limits: Listen to your body and exit the water if you feel numbness or disorientation.
Scout the area: Walk along the riverbank to identify hazards like submerged rocks or strong currents.
Avoid swimming after heavy rain: Water levels rise and currents strengthen, increasing danger.
Wear Bright Fluorescent Colours: Orange, Yellow and Green are considered the most visible.
Swim with a buddy: Having someone nearby adds security and support.
Inform someone of your plans: Let others know where you will swim and when you expect to return.
